When we return to the Davenports’ home, Finn retreats to his room, a cold distance settling in the space between us.

I don’t know what to think of him anymore. My brain ricochets between adoring and despising him. And nothing—not my most primal instincts, nor my capacity for rational thought—is helping to decide whether he’s a friend or an enemy.

Around 8:30, Longworth comes to check on me, asking if I’d like anything, but I get the distinct impression that he’s just keeping tabs on me. I don’t give him the satisfaction of revealing that I’m not okay.

When I’m alone, I breathe deeply, trying to calm my thoughts. I’m so confused by what I saw in the Escapa—the men arguing, the guards who dragged them away. Rys’ ghost-like disappearance.

This place—the supposed utopia that is the Arc—is anything but, as it turns out. It’s just a prettier version of the Mire, a police state where the enforcers of the law are expressionless drones, the government is a faceless entity, and voicing even the most minor dissent is the greatest sin imaginable.

It’s no wonder those two men in the Escapa were arguing. They were probably consumed by pent-up rage—not to mention frustration—after years of forcing smiles to occupy their exhausted lips.

I’m beginning to suspect everyone in the Arc walks around with fake grins, waiting for the day when they, too, will break.

I fall asleep shortly after nine p.m. with my heart hurting for the friend I’ve lost and the boy down the hall who clearly thinks I’m too much of a pain in the butt to bother with.
